LLLT – Low Level Laser Therapy
Did you know that in the Clinic we utilise Low Level Laser Therapy, or LLLT, through the RJ-Physiolaser Olympic Device.
LLLT has been used for almost 40 years- the low levels of visible or near infra red light being known to reduce pain, inflammation, and oedema. The LLLT is known to also promote the healing of wounds, restoration of deeper tissues and nerves, and the prevention of tissue damage.
The initial effects of the light are seen in the mitochondria. This leads to increased ATP production, modulation of reactive oxygen species and the induction of transcription factors that in turn lead to increased cell proliferation and migration (particularly by fibroblast), modulation in cytokine, growth factors, inflammatory mediator levels, as well as increased oxygenation of tissues.
Through research, LLLT has shown results of these bio-mechanical and cellular changes in animals and patients- including benefits in the increased healing of chronic wounds, improvement in sports injuries and carpal tunnel syndrome, pain reduction in arthritis and neuropathies, and amelioration of damage after heart attacks, stroke, nerve injury, retinal toxicity, as well as also improving cognitive function.
The laser energy (dependent on the wavelength) is absorbed by the targeted cells and tissues- the correct wavelength to do this is important and calibrated according to the indicated tissue treated.
LLLT is an ideal, passive systemic therapy method that is classified as being risk free and suitable for more patients.
